The Basics: LSD stands for Limited Slip Differential
Posted Thursday, December 18, 2008

Tonight I was driving home late and it was raining. I have a rear wheel drive car but I don't have a limited slip differential (or LSD). This is an annoying set of circumstances. As a layman, I only need to kind of know what an LSD is and how it works. In a car there is a point at which the axles meet together in conjunction with the drive shaft. The drive shaft comes directly from the transmission and is spinning. The differential then transfers the power to the axles and gets the wheels turning. Essentially, the inside tire is supposed to turn slower or at a different speed than the outside tire during a turn, hence "differential".  This action allows the vehicle to make a smooth turn. Now in a standard run-of-the-mill differential, if one tire does not have grip then all of the...

Garage: 1994 Mazda Miata (another one)
Posted Friday, December 19, 2008

How I deal with envy... In the not to distant past, in a location fairly close to where I live, Austin asked me to take a look at vehicle he was keen on purchasing.  Being the good brother-in-law and only mechanic in the family it was my duty to go. As we pulled in the driveway I was eying the gleaming red Miata with quite the skepticism.  My gaze shifted over to Austin.  "You're sure you want to drive that, Austin?" "Just shut up and look at the car.  I know what I want."  He retorted.  Not wanting to the press the issue, I stepped out and gave the little convertible a good used car look over.  After finding almost no problems, except for a few minor leaks which is common for a car that age, I hopped into the passenger seat and Austin pulled the car out for a test drive. I...

Happy Holidays from 62mph
Posted Wednesday, December 24, 2008

We here at 62mph wish everyone a very happy holidays. In honor of the festive occasion we decided to send our special wishes to everyone hoping that they get the gifts that we know we won't receive. Austin: Every year I see loads of cars. This year I spent a lot of time in Scottsdale and it became a regular experience to see cars that cost significantly more than my house. And yes every time I would pass a Ferrari F430 or a Lamborghini Merciélago I could feel my heart rate increase. Those cars produce a reaction that my wife could be nothing but jealous of, but still none so much as my all time favorite of the Lotus Exige S 240. In spite of the fact that this is a no limits wish list, I think the fact the Lotus checks in at a completely realistic and attainable price of right around...

Review: Infiniti G35 Coupe
Posted Monday, December 29, 2008

This was a pretty fun review to film as we had access to a closed private four lane road that was fairly new and about 2 miles long. Unfortunately timing was short and we didn't get all of the shots we were hoping for. As a result this film has been sitting for a year now and is just now being released during Ketchup Week 2008....

BMW 335d
Posted Tuesday, December 30, 2008

What if you could have a family sedan that could accelerate to 60 miles per hour in under 6.0 seconds and still get 36 miles per gallon on the highways, would you buy one?  Now what if I told you it was a diesel, would you still want one?  For me, I'm...not so sure. The new 335d has quite an exciting prospect for a family car with an impressive twin turbo 3.0L diesel engine delivering 265 HP and a monstrous 425 ft-lbs of torque.  This Beamer also has an impressive 560 mile range due to its fuel-efficient diesel engine and it will give it's driver an estimated 23 miles per gallon in the city and 36 on the highway.  Can you say road trip? But all this comes at a price.  The 335d starts at almost $44,000 and is the most expensive of the 3 series BMWs.  In addition the engine requires...

2009 Volkswagen CC
Posted Monday, January 5, 2009

To be totally and completely honest I have always sort of had a crush on VW. I don't really know why. I loved the way that the Mk4 Golf's looked. I loved the way that the Jetta looked. I owned a Mk3 Golf that would have been quite the oddity in America as it was carburated and had a manual choke, but I owned it in South Africa where they still make the Mk1 Golf. Needless to day that I always have looked on them with favor...until this last generation. You will notice that I emphasize how much I LIKED the way they looked. I think that the latest generation of Volkswagen sedans just don't look very good. Something to do with the rump I think. Be that as it may I am finally seeing a VW that I can dig again. The 2009 Volkswagen CC. Allen for some reason feels that the new Mazda6 is the...

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX
Posted Tuesday, January 6, 2009

What's not to like about the new 2009 Imprezza WRX?  It has all wheel drive, a turbocharged 2.5 L engine stolen right out of an STI and a zero to 60 mile per hour time that could make a grown man pee his pants.  Even with all that acceleration, the WRX does fair decent on the gas mileage by pulling down 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The gas mileage is not to impressive compared to a Honda Civic, but I don't see stock Civic SI's putting down horsepower numbers like these.  Take a look, Subaru upped the power output of the standard WRX to 265 HP and 244 ft-lbs of torque from previous model years 224 HP and 226 ft-lbs of torque. Subaru didn't just mess with the engine, they also changed the handling characteristics to provide a firmer suspension feel with less under-steer...

Why Detriot is Missing the Mark
Posted Wednesday, January 7, 2009

As most people know by now, we are in an economic recession. If you didn't then you can consider yourself informed. The big three have had their time in Washington and after a fairly embarrassing time, not exactly of their own fault, they were allocated a set amount of TARP funds to help them stay on their feet. -Ford said they didn't need it and were doing alright, but said thanks anyways. -Chrysler took it and ran full page thank you ads in major newspapers costing somewhere around $500,000. -GM then took out a full page apology letter ad in Automotive News. So there is a trend in this pattern that I see and I think others do too (unless you live in Detroit apparently). I don't know that the problem is with the housing market, or recession, or with inflated gasolin...

2009 Saturn Astra
Posted Thursday, January 8, 2009

I live right by an elementary school and have to drive by it to get home.  The past few days I have noticed this sharp looking white 5-door compact and can't help but wonder who makes that car.  Turns out it is the new Saturn Astra. I know yesterday it was mentioned that GM and Chrysler have their work cut out for them. GM, who I think is ahead of the game over Chrysler, deserves major credit when they decided to bring the Saturn Astra over from Europe.  This isn't a new car for GM as the Saturn Astra is based on a Opel and Vauxhall car that has been selling for years in Europe. The Astra is available in either a teenager friendly 3-Door or a family friendly 5-door, both equipped with a 1.8 L Variable Valve timing engine capable of a modest 138 HP.  I wasn't joking about the...

2010 Porsche Panamera Gran Turismo
Posted Friday, January 9, 2009

You know what I really want?  I want a sports car that I can put the whole family in.   A car that doesn't compromise on luggage space, that has comfort enough for four adults, pulls a lateral G around the skid pad with out a tether, stops an inch short of a foot, and still has a zero to 60 mph time under the 5 second mark.  Impossible! Maybe, for this decade anyways.  Well luckily this decade is almost over. In 2010, Porsche is going to be releasing a new model named the Panamera with the aim of speed, luxury, agility, and even fuel economy.  The four door sports sedan is going to be placing Porsche into a  market where it has never been;  A market where BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have dominated.   But Porsche intends on waging war in that market by obliterating the idea that...

Lexus IS vs. Infiniti G37 (Price:Power)
Posted Thursday, January 15, 2009

VS I like crunching numbers when it comes to cars.  Weight, torque and horsepower play a huge part of what I like about a car but it isn't the only thing.  Take the new 2009 Infiniti G37 sedan and the 2009 Lexus IS series cars, both battle the same luxury sport sedan market.  Here's a concise list of the specs for both.  Pay close attention to weight, horsepower, vehicle price and transmission options. Infiniti G37 Price: $33,250 (Base), $33,700 (Journey), $35,750 (AWD G37x), $34,250 (Sport 6spd Manual) Horsepower/Torque:  328 HP/269 ft-lbs Weight:  3,581 (Base), 3,590 (Journey), 3,791 (AWD), 3,615 (Sport) Wheel Base: 112.2 Inches Fuel Economy (City/Hwy): 18/26 (Base), 18/26 (Journey), 18/25 (AWD), 17/25 (Sport) Lexus IS Price: $32,325 (IS250), $36,605...

Volkswagen BlueSport
Posted Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Volkswagen debuts a new concept that has Austin trembling in fear.  A potential Miata killer.  The Volkswagen BlueSport is built with intent on bringing an economical rear drive roadster into the mix.  With fuel economy ranging from 35 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway, the angular BlueSport will be powered by a mid-engine 2.0 L direct injected turbo Diesel.  The engine will put out a 177 horsepower and a tire shredding 258 ft-lbs of torque.  In spite of the Diesel engine the two seater isn't heavy.  In fact the BlueSport has similar dimensions to a Miata and it flips the scales at a mere 2,600 lbs.  Volkswagen says the little beast will have a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds and with the sharp angles it will certainly dispel any "cutesy" connotations that are found with Miata. To...

Barrett Jackson Drift Demonstration
Posted Tuesday, January 20, 2009

At Barrett-Jackson this year (and years past) Ford and Falken do pretty slick drift demonstration with Vaughn Gittin, Jr. We snuck past the rails and took some video. This isn't super long as we took out most of the boring stuff. ...

AZ Toyota Drive
Posted Wednesday, January 21, 2009

About 10 days ago I took a little drive with the local AZ Toyota crowd up one of the best drives in the state of Arizona.  We started at the Quick Trip located at the beginning of Highway 88 and drove all the way past Canyon Lake to Tortilla Flat. I met Brady at the "QT", the unofficial organizer for the majority of the AZ Toyota clubs in the Phoenix area, who proudly brought his AE86 with a silver top 20V 4AGE powered engine.  But as the Toyota's started to wheel in, Cris (Picture Below) and John showed up with later generation Corollas.  But we didn't just have Corollas showing up to this, there was a Celica GT-S, a *cough* Infiniti G35 *cough*, MR-S, and several 3rd generation Supras. The supra below is Clint's and has a turbo charged 2.5 L 1JZGTE engine putting 330 HP...

2010 Fusion Hybrid Dashboard
Posted Thursday, January 22, 2009

I was able to get one of the Ford representatives to give me a quick rundown of the dashboard system on the new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. I have been reading about it a bit and honestly I think it is one of the best innovations of any new car by any manufacturer. I have been wondering for ages why nobody has yet put an LCD gauge cluster in their cars and Ford has gone and done it first. From the looks of it they have a winner too. It seems like it would take a bit of playing around with it to customize it exactly how you want, but I think it is very innovative and certainly visually appealing....

How to Replace a Constant Velocity (C.V.) Boot
Posted Thursday, January 29, 2009

The C.V boot on Austin's Sentra tore and he got quoted about three hundred buck-a-roos to replace it.  As I am the mechanic of the family that means I get to do it in my garage for the price of beer.  It's a fair trade... Estimated Time: Two Beers (about 1 hour) Skill Level: Some mechanical aptitude and tools will definitely help. 1.  Crack open a beer. 2. Raise the front of the vehicle using a jack and support the vehicle with jack stands. 2.  Remove the appropriate wheel.  The driver side outer boot was torn so that was the side of the car we took the wheel off of. 3.  Remove the cotter pin from the axle nut. 4.  Remove the cotter pin for the lower ball joint securing the ball joint nut in place.  Take a swig of beer.  The beer that night was Four Peaks...

2009 Barrett-Jackson Event
Posted Friday, January 30, 2009

A couple of weeks ago was the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson Auto Auctions. You can watch all of the actual auction on the Speed Channel and see some amazing vehicles get sold at rediculous prices, but what else happens there? What does a $55 ticket give you access to? Take a look. It gives you a chance to look at lots of really cool cars, and to see what the social elite spend their money on. Helicopters, jets, million dollar boats, and pictures of ferraris mashed up with classic works of art....

CL360: First attempt at polishing
Posted Tuesday, February 3, 2009

I ordered a Dremel tool and purchased some aluminum polish.  I've been looking on how to polish aluminum all over the Internet so I can polish the engine cases on the CL.  So here's what  I learned. 1.  Get a variety of sand paper (I use 400, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit).  Wet/dry sandpaper seems to work the best because you can wash it out. 2. In one direction, sand the piece.   Do not sand in circles. The idea is to smooth the aluminum out.  after you get the rough spots worked out take the next softest grit up (1,000) and sand at a 90 degree angle of what you did before.  This gets the scratches out from the previous sand paper.  Do this using all of the sand paper and switch directions every time you change sand paper. 3. Use some rubbing compound over the piece to help...

Honda S2000
Posted Thursday, February 5, 2009

Time to pay homage.  Honda announced last week, this is the last year of the S2000 roadster; a brilliant car that ran a 10 year stretch.  I for one am sad to see such a keen car be removed from Honda's dependable but fairly boring line-up.  That's not to say that Honda is a bad company but the only other sporting oriented car they have is the Civic SI. The S2000 roadster is almost a perfect combination of sport, handling and fun.  It is a tribute to the company to pull 237 HP out of a 2.2L engine without forced induction and still maintain dependability.  If you've ever driven one you know. I had the privileged of driving a 2002 s2000 with the 2.0L f20c engine with 240 horsepower (all stock just smaller displacement than the later model S2000).  It wasn't too spectacular below...
