Toyota AE86 Corolla GTS
Posted Monday, December 3, 2007

We test out an AE86 coupe in the canyons of Arizona. This being the first time that either of us have driven this car with any real intention, we quickly find out what all of the hype is about. With a small 1.6 liter engine, and a fully tuned suspension this car manages to make short work of the canyons....

In the Niche: (Part 2)
Posted Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Allen: I spent all night working on this. Here's the list in order of importance to me: 1. Rear Wheel Drive (Limited Slip differential should be an option.) 2. 28 mpg (Preferably, a 4 cylinder) 3. Around or Under $25,000 4. Manual Transmission 5. Must be classified as a compact and have 2 doors. All of the other options I can live with. A Turbocharger would be a great option but is not necessary (See "F** Front Wheel Drives and you will get an idea of what makes a Turbo great.) You might be wondering at this point if any car like this ever existed? The answer is yes. Most cars produced up until the 1980s were rear wheel drive. The production of front wheel drives came into play in the mid-1980s due to cost. They can produce a front wheel drive compact cheaper then a rear...

Will the Lotus Never Wilt?
Posted Thursday, November 15, 2007

Of all of the cars out there; Of all of the news that I read; Of all of the gimmicky re-releases; there is one car that I never tire hearing about; the Lotus Elise. I feel like one of Odysseus' crew members from the Odyssey. The ones who get caught up with the lotus eaters and never want to leave. That is me. I am a lotus eater. I am high on the Lotus. I just cannot get enough of this stupid looking car, and they just keep getting better. The Elise premiered in 1995 at the Frankfurt Auto Show and has now been going strong for 12 years. In the US however the Elise has only been on the market for a few years as it was introduced here in the 2005 model year. The Elise is basically a super small, light weight, sports car with a tiny engine and a massive power to weight ratio. It comes...

Drifter's Do it Sideways! (Why I like drifting.)
Posted Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Drifting has become this rapidly growing racing sport around the world. There are national circuits for the United States as well as open drift days for the average driver to test his or her skills. But why is it so popular? What makes it better then just normal racing? Well I intend to tell you why I like it so much and I can only hope that most people who enjoy drifting will agree with me. First off let me explain what drifting is. Drifting is getting your car sideways or over steering it and doing it with style. What I mean by style is plenty of tire smoke and good angle. But that is not what makes drifting attractive to me. Drifting is attractive to me because it takes away the element of money (to an extent you still have to have some money for repairs, tires, etc.)....

My Grown-Up Christmas List
Posted Monday, December 24, 2007

I was thinking on my way to work about what I would like to have if money was never an issue. Since it is the season for gifts we figured Austin and would write our Christmas lists out and explain why we want what we want. I believe most of the stuff on my list pertains to vehicles, speed or various things having to do with elements of this site. Allen: 1. A Red Rider Double Pump Action BB gun. Why? Duh, haven't you seen A Christmas Story? Besides I can shoot out tires on Austin's Sentra. And no, won't shoot my eye out. (Austin: I grew up with one of these. Good luck killing a bird with it. It's hard.) I'm not trying to kill a bird, just shoot out your tires... 2. This one is a triple whammy. A monster truck, Lotus Exige, and Toyota Prius. The Toyota Prius is for my sister...

Mid-Life Crisis
Posted Saturday, January 12, 2008

The other day was my birthday and I believe it is generally the onset of most mid-life crisis; depression, countless hours of video games, and complete discouragement as to how my life has been thus far. I want to reach for greater things, bigger things, and things that excite me. I determined that I need the ultimate vehicle for the mid-life crisis. First off I don't want anything blatantly over the top. I need something refined and respectable. Something that gets great gas mileage but also performs; the vehicle has to make a subtle statement. It only has to carry two people because, frankly, it is my mid-life crisis and kids don't have to be involved. I was thinking the new Corvette because it gets a sensible 27 miles per gallon. The Corvette is the epitome of Mid-Life Crisis...

Can You Roll with 100hp? (AE86 Dyno)
Posted Monday, April 14, 2008

Did I ever mention how much I love my old 1987 Toyota Corolla? Well, I do. (If you don't care about reading my article and only care about the numbers then scroll the to bottom of the page.) The past several month, life for Austin and I has been down right insane. I'm pretty sure there isn't a person out there reading or checking out our web site who hasn't experienced the craziness of life at one time or another. During this craziness, Austin somehow manged to coerce me out of my S13, 240sx, or what ever you'd like to call it. So I've been stuck driving my Corolla. Which it turns out I like actually better. So If your interested in an S13 email me allen@62mph.com During the progression of time I met some fellow AE86ers' (I guess that is what you call us... it's a word...

How to Stick it to the $@*% Oil Companies...
Posted Monday, June 2, 2008

Yesterday was the first day in my entire life that I paid more than $50 to fill my fuel tank on my 240sx. I paid almost $4 a gallon. (I took a 15 minute pause right here in the article to punch a few inanimate objects and yell at the fact that gasoline is so so expensive... Feel free to do the same.) So I figured, I would recommend a few ways that you can save and hang on to that precious liquid gold in your tank a little longer. First, keep your hands, arms, heads, and puppy dogs in the vehicle at all times. As much as my dogs like the windows down the gas mileage of you car can suffer greatly by just having the window down. With the windows open air flows into the vehicle and not around it, decreasing how aerodynamic it is. This is more critical the faster you are driving. So at...

AZ Toyota Drive
Posted Wednesday, January 21, 2009

About 10 days ago I took a little drive with the local AZ Toyota crowd up one of the best drives in the state of Arizona.  We started at the Quick Trip located at the beginning of Highway 88 and drove all the way past Canyon Lake to Tortilla Flat. I met Brady at the "QT", the unofficial organizer for the majority of the AZ Toyota clubs in the Phoenix area, who proudly brought his AE86 with a silver top 20V 4AGE powered engine.  But as the Toyota's started to wheel in, Cris (Picture Below) and John showed up with later generation Corollas.  But we didn't just have Corollas showing up to this, there was a Celica GT-S, a *cough* Infiniti G35 *cough*, MR-S, and several 3rd generation Supras. The supra below is Clint's and has a turbo charged 2.5 L 1JZGTE engine putting 330 HP...

2010 and 2009 Ford Flex
Posted Friday, February 6, 2009

If you bought the 2009 Ford Flex, I'm sorry to tell you that you may have missed out on a better Flex.  I could write some cheesy thing about how Ford is "Flex"ing its muscles with the 2010 Flex but I won't.  Ford is allowing a new option to be installed on the all-wheel-drive versions of its retro styled box....  Twin Turbos. That's right, twin - &%$@#  - turbos!  The EcoBoost engine will bump the standard 3.5L V-6 from 262 hp to a earth stopping 355 horsepower.  That is nearly a 100 horsepower increase!  This is the part where someone is suppose to mumble under their breath about how the fuel economy will suck...  Well the fuel economy drops from 19/24 (City/Highway) for the standard flex to 18/22.  That's not that bad at all for 355 freaking horsepower! Let...
